How learning a few simple skills could help you make a real difference.

Imagine if someone close to you—a friend, family member, colleague or neighbour—was struggling with their mental health. Would you know what to say? Would you feel confident enough to start a conversation?

Many of us learn physical first aid so we know what to do if someone has a heart attack or breaks a bone. But when it comes to mental health, many people aren't sure how to recognise the signs or offer support.

That's where Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) comes in.

So, what is Mental Health First Aid?

Mental Health First Aid is an internationally recognised, evidence-based training program that teaches everyday people how to recognise when someone may be developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis. It provides practical skills to approach the person, listen without judgement, offer reassurance and encourage them to seek appropriate professional help, while also supporting them until that help is available (Mental Health First Aid (MHFA), 2026).

Importantly, Mental Health First Aid does not train people to become counsellors, psychologists or mental health professionals. Instead, it equips participants with the confidence and knowledge to provide initial support—much like physical first aid provides immediate care before medical treatment.

Why is Mental Health First Aid so important?

Mental health challenges are more common than many people realise.

In Australia, around one in five adults experiences a mental health condition in any given year, and almost half of us will experience a mental health condition at some point in our lives (Australian Bureau of Statistics, 2020-2022). Chances are someone you know—whether at work, in your family or in your local community—may be facing these challenges right now.

Recognising the signs early and responding with understanding and confidence can encourage someone to seek help sooner, reduce stigma and help them feel less alone.

Sometimes, one supportive conversation can make all the difference.

What will you learn?

During a Mental Health First Aid course, you'll learn practical skills that you can use in everyday life, including how to:

  • Recognise common signs and symptoms of mental health problems.

  • Approach someone you are concerned about.

  • Listen in a supportive and non-judgemental way.

  • Respond to someone experiencing a mental health crisis.

  • Encourage professional support when appropriate.

  • Suggest practical self-help strategies.

  • Build confidence in having conversations about mental health.

These skills are relevant whether you're at work, at home or involved in your local community (Mental Health First Aid (MHFA), 2026).

Who should do a Mental Health First Aid course?

One of the best things about Mental Health First Aid is that it's for any adult (aged 18+).

You don't need a healthcare background or previous experience.

Our participants come from all walks of life, including:

You don't need to have all the answers

One of the biggest myths about helping someone with a mental health problem is that you need to "fix" them.

You don't.

Often, the most valuable thing you can do is notice that something isn't right, start a conversation and help connect the person with the support they need.

Mental Health First Aid gives you the confidence to take that first step.

Because sometimes knowing how to ask, "Are you okay?"—and what to do next—can change someone's life.
